Starting From Dinner Gatherings, Artist Tang Kwok-hin’s Latest Art Project “Pandiculate” is Now Calling for Participants to Collaborate in Its Research and Making.
Coordinated by Rooftop Institute, “Our Daily, Our Border” will present artist Tang Kwok-hin’s first large-scale installation-and-performance project “Pandiculate” in September 2018. The project alludes to the challenge of reestablishing value collectively in an unadulterated space after the deconstruction of the norms in daily life.
Tang sees the hidden potential energy beneath our monotonous daily life and habits. Likewise, he sees the other side of the coin in aesthetics. These are the origins of his creations, as well as the main targets he responded to in the past with his own reasoning. In this project, Tang would like to recruit participants publicly and share his observations and daily experience through workshops. In return, he hopes to be inspired by the participants’ observations and daily experience so that they can all contribute to the shaping of the project’s presentation.
The era of separation and chaos; the homeless mind and body. In a completely systemized world, people exchange information via networks which are at once virtual and real; they meet and part in different daily social circles. Tang hopes that we can join together in dinners and gatherings with the awareness of our essence to seek out the energy and aesthetics from the accumulated meaning in our lives in troubled times.
Open call details:
- Tang Kwok-hin invites participants for a number of dinner gatherings at his home in Kam Tin Walled Village between April and May 2018, in which he initiates dialogues with the guests.
- After the dinner gatherings, Tang will form research teams to visit the homes of some participants.
- Subsequently, eight workshops will be conducted in different forms between May and June.
The videos recorded in the workshops may appear in the exhibition in September. Some participants will have the chance to perform during the exhibition.
When we’re tired, what kind of posture or alert do we surrender? If you have interest in or doubts about observing daily life, we invite you to join this project and pandiculate with Tang Kwok-hin.

About the Artist
Tang Kwok-hin is a mixed media artist. He received his Master of Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His artistic path began with unceasing queries about his native background. His exploration has later evolved into an examination into origins of existence and intimate aesthetics, intertwining the personal encounters in the course of his life. These musings are embodied in his works. Blurring the boundaries between art and life, his creations integrate with mankind’s various conflicted intentions to reveal intrinsic values, binary tension and the rhythm of the senses. He often appropriates and reconstructs daily and personal contexts to narrate hidden stories in life, touching on topics such as growth, inheritance, freedom, capitalism, consumerism, nature, politics and norms, to express his concern for humans and their surroundings. He is the recipient of Outstanding Award at the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial 2009 and Asian Cultural Council’s fellowship in 2013, as well as the finalist of Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2010, 2011 and 2014.
