Using film as a medium for creating closer ties between Hong Kong and the rest of Asia, Rooftop Institute has contributed a programme for ‘Montage Express’ that focuses on Korean animation. They have brought the feature-length film, Approved for Adoption, and 20 short films, all of which explore various aspects of microhistory. These are tales of personal growth confronting the challenges of different social values, of family love and loss, of the recognition and rejection of identity and of the reconnection of ourselves with others. It is hoped that, by giving audiences the chance to relate to their Asian counterparts through these stories, they can rethink today’s social dilemmas in Asia, reflect on modern life in Hong Kong and thus gain a broader perspective on their local experiences.
